First Baptist Church Installs 21st Century AV into 19th Century Building

by | Audio, AVL Projects, Case Studies, Production, Video

The First Baptist Church of Nashville has been serving the downtown area for more than 200 years. Having worshiped in the current building for over 50 years, the leadership believed it was necessary to update the audio visual components of their worship service. The challenge was to integrate state-of-the-art systems while maintaining the integrity of this historic sanctuary.

Church leadership wanted to renovate the sanctuary, which had last been expanded in 1970 and update their worship production technology. Their primary goals were to connect with people and glorify God for years to come. The property management committee approached Mankin Media with the dream of integrating technologies, uniting their congregation,
and embracing their community.

The challenge

The challenge was to integrate state-of-the-art systems while maintaining the integrity of this historic sanctuary, which has been a key part of Nashville’s history since 1820.

The logistics of the project included reconfiguring the main stage, updating their audio system and installing new video screens for worship. Mankin was able to collaborate with the committee to achieve the dream of the church.

Mankin deployed:

  • d&b audiotechnik
    Y-Series 10 box line array
  • d&b audiotechnik 44S
    Front Fill and Under
    Balcony
  • Digital Projection VX
    Series LED Walls 2.5mm
    pixel pitch, screen sizes
    11.9’ x 6.7’
  • Ross Ultrix Router
  • Ross Carbonite 2ME Switcher
  • Panasonic HE145 Cameras
  • Panasonic RP150 Controller
  • ETC ION XE
  • Clearcom Arcadia
  • Clearcom Helixnet Stations
  • Clearcom Freespeak Packs

The First Baptist tech team included Mankin Media’s Guardian services to ensure everything ran smoothly. Modern-day AVL systems are complex, and troubleshooting can be tricky, even for the technically savvy. Guardian by Mankin is a suite of products designed to provide remote, real-time, support through Mankin’s network operations center (NOC). This gives the First Baptist team a knowledge source of information to help troubleshoot during their rehearsals as well as during service on Sunday.

My Love-Hate Relationship with the De-esser

I don’t remember ever using a de-esser in the early days of my recording career. Sure, there were a few clever engineers who would side-chain a compressor to tame certain frequency ranges, but that was rare and not always used on vocals. If a vocal was harsh or overly...
