A friend of mine asked me the other day, ” Do you think technology belongs in a house of worship?” Well I grew up in a church with very little technology. Then again, it was the 70’s. Technology wasn’t easily attainable especially for churches. As I grew up, projectors and live musicians playing in church started to become more regular, then one day theatrical production and technology became available, and church seemed to be an event. I mean that in a good way. As technology became more available to families and children, the church had to maintain that line of involvement, making it an event again but with technology assisting.
Scripture
Scripture is considered the sacred text and word of God in many religious traditions. It serves as the ultimate authority and guide for faith, morals, and worship. Scriptures are ancient texts that have been preserved and passed down through generations. Their teachings and principles are seen as eternal and unchanging. Technology can enhance the worship experience by improving sound and visual quality, providing access to remote congregants through live streaming, and facilitating participation through digital hymnals and interactive sermons. Technological tools can streamline administrative tasks, such as managing congregation communications, scheduling, and organizing events.
Differences
Scripture originates from a divine or spiritual source, serving as a timeless guide for faith and practice. It is stable and unchanging in its teachings and principles. It is central to the spiritual and doctrinal aspects of worship, providing the content and basis for religious practices. It has direct influence on the beliefs, values, and practices of the faith community.
Technology originates from human ingenuity, serving to enhance and support various aspects of life, including worship. It is dynamic and ever-changing, adapting to new innovations and societal needs. It serves as a tool to facilitate and enhance the worship experience without altering the core teachings and practices derived from scripture.
Social media posts, YouTube clips, podcasts, have all made their way into the church. In 2024 most people live much of their life online. They read the news, plan events, talk to friends online. And through streaming, more and more people are going to church online.
Technology has its place in church, you can research bible Scripture in seconds that could take you possibly hours to do with a paper Bible. Information will serve formation, This can really connect with your congretion that may want to do this privately or in there own time, making it more personal which will connect them more to the reads.
Integration in Worship
Scripture and technology can complement each other when technology is used to support and enhance the understanding and practice of scriptural teachings.
This creates a balanced approach ensures that technology serves as a facilitator rather than a distraction, maintaining the primacy of scripture in worship.
Make sure your church uses Instagram and Facebook, This will create a great online network of communication and connection. Have video displays or TV monitors showing your church’s social media links, live streams, or event calendars that also serve to connect your members. Never avoid new technology out of fear, because we’d be throwing out all the good technology can bring to your House of Worship.
